5517: Dennis Woods (01/09/2010)
Sadly we have learned of the death of Dennis Woods who was a pupil at the school from 1936 until 1944, returning as a teacher of French and English in January 1955. After leaving school in 1944 he served in the Royal Navy for three years before going up to Sidney Sussex College Cambridge to read Modern Languages. In addition to the French and German that he taught at Bancroft’s he also spoke Spanish, Italian, and Russian. At Cambridge he played Rugby for his college and was also a hurdler. His first teaching post was at Beckenham Grammar School before he returned to his alma mater. Allegedly he once proclaimed in “august company” that he didn’t think much of Anouilh. An opinion that I do not remember him expressing when Antigone was our ‘A’ level set book. He will be remembered by many of us with affection. His Funeral Service will be at St Peter's Church, Broadstairs (Kent) on Friday September 10th at 12.15 pm. All enquiries c/o Gore Brothers Ltd. Tel: 01843 223534

5515: Inaugural Dinner of the OBLA (04/08/2010)
The recently formed Old Bancroftian Livery Association comprising Old Bancroftians and others linked to the School with connections to the several Livery Companies of the City of London and the City’s oldest TA unit – the Honourable Artillery Company are planning to hold their first Dinner this autumn. Instead of the vast grandeur of Drapers’ Hall, which is familiar to most OB’s, we have chosen one of the smallest, yet equally impressive, Watermen’s Hall is the home of the Watermen & Lightermen renowned for their liveried Royal Bargemasters
